Flashlights

A quality flashlight is a useful piece of EDC and ODC survival gear. Unlike other EDC items such as folding knives, lighters and handguns, flashlights - especially small ones - are virtually never perceived as being dangerous by the unprepared masses. Flashlights can be used for navigating; searching and spotlighting (objects, animals or badguys); disorientation of badguys or animal aggressors (especially using strobe mode); communicating in morse code; signalling to searchers (especially using beacon mode) and as a candle or lamp (using most Maglites). You should carry a flashlight anytime there exists the potential to be operating in the dark, such as in buildings, caves and large vehicles; at night time and especially in the winter months when the days are short.

The two basic types of flashlights are handheld and hands-free. Both types are useful for EDC and ODC, however handheld flashlights are normally easier to carry and faster to activate for EDC purposes.

Handheld flashlights

• Normally tubular

• Normally aluminum with O-ring seals

• Should have either pocket clip or lanyard hole

• Used for navigating, searching or spotlighting

Hands-free flashlights

• Box-shaped or tubular

• Normally polymer with rubber gasket seals

• Attached to headband or mounting bracket

• Used while navigating or performing a task requiring use of hands

It is best to carry a LED (Light Emitting Diode) flashlight; avoid carrying incandescant lights as they tend to be dim, consume more power and are prone to burning out. Good LED's last tens of thousands of hours and can be extremely bright. If possible, carry a light with multiple settings, both for brightness and for flashing modes. Many lights now adjust from "moonlight", which provides enough light to read or work while preserving battery life and your night vision, to "high", which can be used for powerful spotlighting at hundreds of yards, albiet while consuming the batteries' charge relatively quickly. Many lights also have a strobe mode for it's disorienting effect on badguys and dangerous animals, and beacon and S.O.S. signalling modes which can sometimes run for days without changing the batteries. Your light should be waterproof and shock-resistant; it is an electronic item and it's housing must be able to protect the internal circuits from moisture and falls (or recoil, in the case of weapon lights).

There is a common misconception that red light helps to preserve a person's night vision. Objects emitting or reflecting red (long) wavelengths tend to fade faster from our vision than those emitting or reflecting blue (short) wavelengths, especially during twilight or while descending or increasing distance through water. However, the use of red light does not preserve a person's night vision better than any other color. The best way to preserve your night vision is actually by using white light on a very dim setting, which will also allow for proper color recognition of your surroundings.
